Sources of Uncertainty in Multimodel Large Ensemble Projections of the Winter North Atlantic Oscillation

چکیده
Projections of the winter North Atlantic circulation exhibit large spread. Coupled Model Intercomparison Project archives typically provide only a few ensemble members per model, rendering it difficult to quantify reducible model structural uncertainty and irreducible internal variability (IV) in projections. We estimate using Multimodel Large Ensemble Archive that differences explain two-thirds spread late 21st century (2080–2099) projections Oscillation (NAO). This is biased by systematic errors forced NAO response IV. Across Atlantic, explains substantial fraction mean sea level pressure (MSLP) due IV, except central Atlantic. Conversely, MSLP associated with largely unexplained NAO. Therefore, improving understanding alone may not constrain

North Atlantic Oscillation modulates Total Ozone Winter Trends
The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is modulating the Earth’s ozone shield such that the calculated anthropogenic total ozone decrease is enhanced over Europe whereas over the North Atlantic region it is reduced (for the last 30 years). Including the NAO in a statistical model suggests a more uniform chemical winter trend compared to the strong longitudinal variation reported earlier. At Arosa...
متن کاملNorth Atlantic Tropical Storm Frequency Response to Anthropogenic Forcing: Projections and Sources of Uncertainty
The impact of future anthropogenic forcing on the frequency of tropical storms in the North Atlantic basin has been the subject of intensive investigation. However, whether the number of North Atlantic tropical storms will increase or decrease in a warmer climate is still heavily debated and a consensus has yet to be reached. To shed light on this issue, the authors use a recently developed sta...
متن کاملInterannual variability of winter precipitation in the European Alps: relations with the North Atlantic Oscillation
The European Alps rely on winter precipitation for various needs in terms of hydropower and other water uses. Major European rivers originate from the Alps and depend on winter precipitation and the consequent spring snow melt for their summer base flows. Understanding the fluctuations in winter rainfall in this region is crucially important to the study of changes in hydrologic regime in river...
متن کاملThe Effects of North Atlantic Oscillation on the atmospheric middle level Anomaly and precipitation of Iran.Case study: west of Iran.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the middle levels of Atmosphere and precipitation changes in the West of country. To do this, first monthly rainfall data of 17 synoptic stations of the West Country in period of 30 years from 1984 to 2014 of country were collected from Meteorological Organization. As well as North Atlantic Oscillation...
متن کاملAn Overview of the North Atlantic Oscillation
The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is one of the most prominent and recurrent patterns of atmospheric circulation variability. It dictates climate variability from the eastern seaboard of the United States to Siberia and from the Arctic to the subtropical Atlantic, especially during boreal winter, so variations in the NAO are important to society and for the environment. Understanding the pro...
